Contracts, intellectual property and licensing

Contracts, intellectual property and licensing covers how contracts and clauses allocate risk, and the licensing of data, software, models and names: indemnities, force majeure, liability, open and commercial licences, intellectual property and trademarks, and why licensing and naming are legal and trust risks, not only formalities.

Twin figures for the Horn of Africa and the Nile basin states, counted from its layers at their stated dates.

Twin builder and simulator.

For Contracts, intellectual property and licensing: the faculty's twin of Horn of Africa on the planet map, the globe and in 3D. Pick a generator, switch layers, run the instruments; every layer prints its provider and date.

The discipline in brief.

The discipline teaches clause drafting for risk allocation, licence compatibility reading, open licence practice from CC BY to the Open Database License, trademark clearance and the handling of regulated words. The faculty's stage is its live case: Natural Earth is public domain, each geoBoundaries division carries its own licence through a gate that refuses non-commercial, no-derivative, permission-based and unknown terms, the GDACS feed is used under the European Commission reuse policy and the UN Treaty Collection is pointed to and never copied. A graduate can read a licence before a dataset is used, draft the clause that allocates a risk and clear a name before it is published.

This area covers how contracts and clauses allocate risk, and the licensing of data, software, models and names: indemnities, force majeure, liability, open and commercial licences, intellectual property and trademarks. It is taught in the department of Law and Regulation, Faculty of Governance, Policy and International Affairs, through 1 course with it as primary discipline.
