Impact assessment, audit and assurance cases for AI systems
Evaluating a model asks what it can do; assuring a system asks whether it is acceptable for a use, and who can show it.

Twin figures for West Cornwall: Goonhilly and the Porthcurno cable landings, counted from its layers at their stated dates.
For AI assurance and audit: the faculty's twin of the Lizard and Penwith on the planet map, the globe and in 3D. Pick a generator, switch layers, run the instruments; every layer prints its provider and date.
Drag to move, right drag or Shift with a drag to turn and tilt, Ctrl with the wheel to zoom. Keyboard: arrows move, Shift with arrows turn and tilt, + and - zoom, 0 resets, V steps through the views, Escape clears.
Flat plan of the same data: relief as contours from the inline grid, the mapped ground infrastructure by kind, the mapped cables and the numbers below. The 3D twin opens on devices with WebGL once its data and library have been checked.
The map loads from this site as it nears the view (MapLibre 6.9.1, checked by hash).
The discipline teaches AI impact assessment under ISO/IEC 42005:2025, risk management under ISO/IEC 23894:2023 and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework with its Generative AI Profile (NIST AI 600-1, 2024), the requirements for bodies that audit AI management systems in ISO/IEC 42006:2025, conformity assessment under the EU AI Act, whose high-risk deadlines the Digital Omnibus on AI moved to December 2027 and August 2028, assurance cases, documentation and post-market monitoring, and the oversight of agentic systems. A graduate can run an impact assessment, build an assurance case and say what an audit can and cannot establish.
This area covers how organisations and third parties establish justified confidence in AI systems: impact assessment, conformity assessment, audits of AI management systems, assurance cases and the documentation regulators require. It is taught in the department of Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems, Faculty of Technology and Digital Systems, through courses still to be authored.
