Faculty of Technology and Digital Systems

Digital systems fail where they meet the physical world: a dish loses a pass, a cable lands in one valley, an exploited vulnerability stays unpatched past its due date, a model scores well on a benchmark and badly in use.

Twin figures for West Cornwall: Goonhilly and the Porthcurno cable landings, counted from its layers at their stated dates.

Twin builder and simulator.

The faculty's twin of the Lizard and Penwith on the planet map, the globe and in 3D. Pick a generator, switch layers, run the instruments; every layer prints its provider and date.

West Cornwall: Goonhilly and the Porthcurno cable landings: a flat plan of the faculty twin. Terrain 0 to 245 m; 4 satellite dishes; 74 communication masts and towers; 12 telephone exchanges; 7 data centres and cable landing stations; 12 aerodromes; 1 telecom offices; Communication line 161 km; 729 known exploited vulnerabilities since 2023-10-17; Night-time lights, VIIRS day-night band: live, loads in the twin. Contours every 25 metres from the elevation grid; communication cables by class; ground infrastructure as marks.
West Cornwall: Goonhilly and the Porthcurno cable landings, United Kingdom. Flat plan of the same data: relief as contours from the inline grid, the mapped ground infrastructure by kind, the mapped cables and the numbers below. The 3D twin opens on devices with WebGL once its data and library have been checked.

What the faculty teaches.

On the dishes, masts and cable landings of West Cornwall the stage carries SGP4 orbit propagation and pass prediction, ground-segment mapping on open geodata, vulnerability triage on the dated CISA catalogue and an evaluation ledger for AI systems, read under ISO/IEC 27001:2022, IEC 61508 and ISO/IEC 42001:2023. A graduate can propagate an orbit from a published element set, read an exploited-vulnerability catalogue as evidence and write an evaluation whose scores say what they mean.

Faculty of Technology and Digital Systems groups 11 disciplines into 3 departments. 1 of the 4 courses whose primary discipline is here are open for enrolment and the rest are in preparation; all of them are taught on the Risk Academy main site, so your record stays in one place.

A graduate can

  • Propagate an orbit from a published element set with SGP4, state the epoch and its age, and compute the passes a ground station can see.
  • Map a region's ground segment, cables, exchanges and data centres from open geodata and name the source, date and licence of every layer.
  • Read an exploited-vulnerability catalogue as a dated snapshot, count what matters by vendor and month, and write a patch-priority note that names its evidence.
  • Design an evaluation of an AI system with stated tasks, metrics and evidence, log its results in a ledger and say what the scores do and do not show.
  • Assess a digital service against the information security, functional safety and AI management standards in force and name the gaps without claiming conformity.

3 departments, 11 disciplines.

Numbered as on the faculty figure at the top of the page. Each card counts the department's disciplines and the courses whose primary discipline is there.

Disciplines by status.

Each discipline once, in its department. A mark is one primary course, filled when it is open.

Where the field is moving.

Emerging areas, the technologies changing practice and the bodies that set the field's methods, from the faculty's expert review. Named for orientation; none of them endorses the Academy.

What is changing now.

The newest developments cited on the faculty's discipline pages, sources checked on 16 October 2026. Each links to its discipline and its source.
