Networks, cables, exchanges and data centres the digital economy runs on
The digital economy rests on a physical layer: masts, fibre, exchanges, data centres and the subsea cables that carry most intercontinental traffic.

Twin figures for Wellington and its harbour, counted from its layers at their stated dates.
For Telecommunications and digital infrastructure: the faculty's twin of Wellington on the planet map, the globe and in 3D. Pick a generator, switch layers, run the instruments; every layer prints its provider and date.
Drag to move, right drag or Shift with a drag to turn and tilt, Ctrl with the wheel to zoom. Keyboard: arrows move, Shift with arrows turn and tilt, + and - zoom, 0 resets, V steps through the views, Escape clears.
Flat plan of the same data. The 3D twin opens on devices with WebGL once its data and library have been checked; the numbers are the same either way.
The map loads from this site as it nears the view (MapLibre 6.9.1, checked by hash).
The discipline teaches access, mobile and backbone networks, subsea cables and their landing stations, internet exchange points and routing, data centres with their power and cooling, satellite links, and the timing and electricity every one of them needs, with route diversity and repair capacity as the core resilience measures. Repeated cable damage in the Baltic and the Red Sea since 2023 made repair ship capacity a security question, and the IEA projects fast growth in data centre power demand. A graduate can map a network's single points of failure and plan the diversity that removes them.
This area covers the physical networks of the digital economy: access and mobile networks, backbones, subsea cables, internet exchange points and data centres, and their dependence on power, timing and repair capacity. It is taught in the department of Utility Networks, Faculty of Infrastructure, Energy and Industry, through courses still to be authored.
