Decision, Behaviour and Communication
Uncertainty and decision making, taught twice over: as the working methods of the field and as its frontier since 2024, with labs on the Academy's tools, open data and the Nexus Standards.
This area covers how to describe, quantify and communicate uncertainty and how to decide under it: types of uncertainty, likelihood and confidence language, decision analysis, cost-loss reasoning and the value of information, expert elicitation, and methods for deep uncertainty such as robust decision making and adaptive pathways.
Discounting decides how far-future and catastrophic losses are weighed, especially for pandemic preparedness and other counter-cyclical investments. HM Treasury (independent review by M. C. Freeman and B. Groom), Green Book Discount Rate Review: Summary of Findings and Recommendations, 30 June 2026

Every course of the programme placed in this discipline.
The Academy proposes how each discipline teaches toward the Nexus Standards; the mapping is open for public review. Bodies and standards are named so learners can find and apply their published work; the Academy teaches their use and links to the publisher, and no affiliation is implied.

Key terms
Uncertainty from natural randomness and uncertainty from limited knowledge.
A situation in which parties cannot agree on models, probabilities or the value of outcomes.
The expected improvement in a decision from obtaining more information.
Choosing options that perform acceptably across many plausible futures.
Reports is the Consortium's quarterly publication. What you know about this subject can become evidence, a case or a correction in the next edition, credited to you and published under CC BY 4.0 where it is your own work.
Every course is free and open. Institutions and experts can co-teach, host a cohort, contribute a lab or review a course before it opens.
Our articles, maps and twins are free to read and free to republish. Readers and partners keep it that way.
Risk Academy is a not-for-profit institution. To ask who funds a piece of work, use the funding questions form.
Editors and the expert reviewers named on each article decide what we publish. Funders and partners do not review or approve articles before publication.
