Illustrative: event footprints crossing a portfolio, losses rising and the exceedance-probability curve

Quantitative Risk Analysis
Catastrophe, exposure and vulnerability modelling, taught twice over: as the working methods of the field and as its frontier since 2024, with labs on the Academy's tools, open data and the Nexus Standards.
This area covers how risk is estimated from hazard, exposure and vulnerability: exposure data and building inventories, vulnerability and fragility functions, the components of catastrophe models, event sets and exceedance curves, secondary uncertainty and model validation, including open models.
It illustrates how model-calculated losses, not field surveys, drive parametric settlement speed and basis risk. Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility, CCRIF to Make Payout to the Government of Panama Following Magnitude 7.7 Earthquake, 15 October 2026

Every course of the programme placed in this discipline.
The Academy proposes how each discipline teaches toward the Nexus Standards; the mapping is open for public review. Bodies and standards are named so learners can find and apply their published work; the Academy teaches their use and links to the publisher, and no affiliation is implied.

Key terms
The people, assets and activities located where hazards can affect them.
A function giving the probability of reaching a damage state for a given hazard intensity.
A large collection of simulated events that represents possible hazard occurrences.
A curve showing the probability that losses exceed each level.
Reports is the Consortium's quarterly publication. What you know about this subject can become evidence, a case or a correction in the next edition, credited to you and published under CC BY 4.0 where it is your own work.
Every course is free and open. Institutions and experts can co-teach, host a cohort, contribute a lab or review a course before it opens.
Our articles, maps and twins are free to read and free to republish. Readers and partners keep it that way.
