Climate and nature financial risk: foundations and practice

This area covers how physical and transition climate risk and nature-related risk reach financial institutions and portfolios, and how they are assessed and disclosed.

Level
L2 Intermediate
Study time

Prerequisites
An L1 course in the area, or an entry review

Why now

Growing disclosure volumes give investors more, though uneven, data to assess nature-related financial risk. Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures, Market momentum on nature accelerates as TNFD-aligned reporting doubles worldwide, 21 September 2026

Learning outcomes

  1. Define physical risk and the other key terms of the discipline and use them correctly in a written case
  2. Explain physical risk to portfolios and transition risk with a worked example and its source
  3. Apply the discipline's method to a documented case and explain each result with its source
  4. Analyse a named case against climate scenario analysis, stating evidence, date and limits

Modules

  1. Physical risk to portfolios
    • Physical risk to portfolios
    • Transition risk
    • Climate scenario analysis
  2. Climate-related disclosure
    • Climate-related disclosure
    • Nature-related dependencies
    • Adaptation and insurability
  3. Transition plans
    • Transition plans
    • Data and model gaps
  4. Lab: the discipline's method
    • A carbon price raises a high-emitting borrower's costs, lowers the value of its assets and shortens its distance to default; the lender reads the change as a climate-adjusted probability of default and acts on pricing, limits and engagement.
    • Work the method through a documented case and explain each result
    • Read the method's sources and stated values

Why now

Growing disclosure volumes give investors more, though uneven, data to assess nature-related financial risk. Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures, Market momentum on nature accelerates as TNFD-aligned reporting doubles worldwide, 21 September 2026

Learning outcomes

  1. Explain what changed in climate and nature financial risk since 2024 and cite the studies, data or rules behind each change
  2. Reproduce A status report finds nature-related reporting doubling on open data and state the uncertainty of the result
  3. Evaluate a 2024 to 2026 study: its question, data, method, limits and what it changes for practice
  4. Design an analysis that combines a frontier method with the faculty's instruments, and justify each choice

Modules

  1. A status report finds nature-related reporting doubling
    • The TNFD's 2026 status report finds TNFD-aligned reporting has doubled worldwide, indicating rapid uptake of nature-related risk disclosure by companies and financial institutions.
    • Growing disclosure volumes give investors more, though uneven, data to assess nature-related financial risk.
    • Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures, 21 September 2026
  2. The sustainability standard-setter decides to set nature-related disclosure requirements
    • The TNFD welcomed an ISSB decision on nature-related standard-setting that draws on the TNFD framework, noting adoption by 730 organisations representing US$22 trillion in assets under management.
    • Moves nature-related dependencies and impacts toward mandatory-ready global disclosure, increasing data needs for financial firms.
    • Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures, 7 November 2025
  3. EBA sets expectations for environmental scenario analysis
    • The EBA published guidelines on how institutions should run environmental scenario analysis to test financial and business model resilience to ESG factors, complementing its ESG risk management guidelines and applying from January 2027.
    • Makes forward-looking climate scenario analysis a supervisory expectation for EU banks.
    • European Banking Authority, 5 November 2025
  4. Reproduction lab
    • Extend the discipline's method with one frontier method and compare its results
    • State the uncertainty and the limits of the result
    • Peer review against a shared checklist
  5. Technology that helps and the risks it carries
    • AI models, tokenisation and regulatory technology.
    • Model risk, cyber accumulation, exposure to quantum attacks on cryptography, and concentration on third-party cloud providers.

06Questions

Questions, answers and key terms

Is the course free?
Yes. Every course and learning material of Risk Academy, led by the Nexus Consortium, is free to study, self-paced or with a cohort. Ordinary participation has no fee; paid work, internships and fellowships are separate arrangements.
What does completing a course give me?
A completion record: the course, its version, the date and what was assessed, private by default and shared by you. It stacks into discipline, department and programme achievements. A record states what was studied and assessed and does not certify competence; it is not a licence, a professional title or an employment status.
Where do the data and the places come from?
Every faculty teaches on a twin of a real place built from open data; each layer carries its provider, licence and date, and every result on the Academy states its source. Maps and figures are indicators for teaching, never an assessment of a place.
How do I take part beyond the course?
Form a competence cell of three to seven people, study a shared pathway, take a supervised assignment in the National Working Groups, or bring a cohort from your institution. For organisations.
