Disaster Risk Reduction and Early Warning
Early warning and anticipatory action, taught twice over: as the working methods of the field and as its frontier since 2024, with labs on the Academy's tools, open data and the Nexus Standards.
This area covers people-centred early warning systems across their four pillars: risk knowledge, monitoring and forecasting, dissemination and communication, and preparedness to respond.
Disaster mortality is nearly six times lower where systems are more comprehensive; gaps in risk knowledge and island states show where investment is most needed. World Meteorological Organization, Early warning systems reach new heights, but critical gaps jeopardise global progress, 12 November 2025

Every course of the programme placed in this discipline.
The Academy proposes how each discipline teaches toward the Nexus Standards; the mapping is open for public review. Bodies and standards are named so learners can find and apply their published work; the Academy teaches their use and links to the publisher, and no affiliation is implied.

A pre-agreed threshold on a forecast or observation that starts a defined action.
The time between a warning and the onset of the hazard.
The share of warnings that were not followed by the warned event.
