Satellite positioning and timing, the threats to them and the backups

Positioning, navigation and timing resilience

Phone networks, power grids, payment systems and aircraft all take position or time from satellites, often without their operators knowing how much.

Twin figures for West Cornwall: Goonhilly and the Porthcurno cable landings, counted from its layers at their stated dates.

Twin builder and simulator.

For Positioning, navigation and timing resilience: the faculty's twin of the Lizard and Penwith on the planet map, the globe and in 3D. Pick a generator, switch layers, run the instruments; every layer prints its provider and date.

West Cornwall: Goonhilly and the Porthcurno cable landings: a flat plan of the faculty twin. Terrain 0 to 245 m; 4 satellite dishes; 74 communication masts and towers; 12 telephone exchanges; 7 data centres and cable landing stations; 12 aerodromes; 1 telecom offices; Communication line 161 km; 729 known exploited vulnerabilities since 2023-10-17; Night-time lights, VIIRS day-night band: live, loads in the twin. Contours every 25 metres from the elevation grid; communication cables by class; ground infrastructure as marks.
West Cornwall: Goonhilly and the Porthcurno cable landings, United Kingdom. Flat plan of the same data: relief as contours from the inline grid, the mapped ground infrastructure by kind, the mapped cables and the numbers below. The 3D twin opens on devices with WebGL once its data and library have been checked.

Drag to move, right drag or Shift with a drag to turn and tilt, Ctrl with the wheel to zoom. Keyboard: arrows move, Shift with arrows turn and tilt, + and - zoom, 0 resets, V steps through the views, Escape clears.

The discipline in brief.

The discipline teaches GNSS systems and signals, the timing chains of telecommunications, energy and finance, jamming and spoofing, which have disrupted aviation and shipping around the Baltic and the eastern Mediterranean since 2022, space weather effects on GNSS, interference monitoring, resilient receivers and holdover clocks, and backups from eLoran and fibre timing to inertial navigation. It treats PNT as critical infrastructure in its own right. A graduate can map a service's dependence on GNSS, assess its exposure to interference and specify a backup with a stated holdover.

This area covers the dependence of transport, energy, telecommunications and finance on satellite positioning, navigation and timing, the threats of jamming, spoofing and space weather, and the backups and monitoring that keep critical services running when GNSS is degraded. It is taught in the department of Cyber, Digital and Space Systems, Faculty of Technology and Digital Systems, through courses still to be authored.
