02Position

A free, learning-by-doing environment

Risk Academy, led by the Nexus Consortium, is a learning-by-doing environment for the study of risk. Its courses and learning materials are free, and they are organised in faculties, departments and disciplines that span the full range of risk, from the Earth system and natural hazards to infrastructure, health, finance, technology and governance. Learners work on live models, open data and digital twins of real places, and every result states its source and date.

The Academy is designed to work with higher-education institutions, research laboratories, public institutions and communities to deliver risk education and risk literacy in every format: self-paced courses, cohort study, labs, field exercises and open lessons. Institutions are named as partners only once a cooperation is in place.

F01 to F14 are the recorded handoffs of the programme year, each with the artefact that moves and its phase; R1, R2, R3 and R4 carry work around the ring. A loop counts when every pillar on it is selected. Every pillar is led by the Nexus Consortium.
  1. Nexus Labs, led by the Nexus ConsortiumWhere questions become experiments and prototypes: new methods, data and tools are tried in the open, with their limits on record, before the Foundry builds them, under the Nexus Consortium.Nexus Labs
  2. Nexus Foundry, led by the Nexus ConsortiumWhere things are built, simulated and prepared: every output of GCRI Canada, GRF and GRA, under the Nexus Consortium.Nexus Foundry
  3. Nexus Universe, led by the Nexus ConsortiumWhere everything comes together in the annual programme, with GCRI Canada, GRF and GRA each contributing in its role and capacity.Nexus Universe

What the Academy teaches from the ecosystem

05Institutions

Who does what

The roles of each body, stated in the same words on every site of the ecosystem.

The Nexus Standards are an open programme of standards for systemic risk, published by GCRI Canada as publisher of record and stewarded, once constituted, by a Global Standards Council with national and specialised councils. The Global Centre for Risk and Innovation (GCRI) stewards evidence, methods, data and the open research behind the standards. The Global Risks Forum (GRF) convenes participation and keeps the public record of recognition and standing. The Global Risks Alliance (GRA) makes risk evidence readable to finance and insurance. Risk Academy teaches the standards and lets learners take part in reviewing and translating them. Nexortium Foundry provides the technology that runs the standards and holds no vote in their governance. None of these bodies certifies, accredits, regulates or approves; a Nexus identifier identifies a record and never certifies it, and conformance is evidence read under each institution's own rules.

06Practice

Where subjects are practised

Each discipline page cites the institutional pages where its subject is worked on, as sources and as places of practice.

07National model

How countries and institutions engage

How a country organises its risk work within the ecosystem, and the route its competent authorities follow.

08Naming

Who runs the Academy

Risk Academy is led by the Nexus Consortium, which stewards the Academy, its courses and its records. Completing a course gives a completion record from Risk Academy of what was studied and assessed.
