Climate and Ocean Sciences
Climate science, variability and change, taught twice over: as the working methods of the field and as its frontier since 2024, with labs on the Academy's tools, open data and the Nexus Standards.
This area covers the physical climate system: observed baselines, variability modes such as the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, projections from climate models under scenario families, and change in glaciers, permafrost and mountain regions.
It gives an annually updated, traceable estimate between IPCC cycles, useful for calibrating scenario baselines and the pace of warming in risk models. Earth System Science Data (Copernicus Publications), Indicators of Global Climate Change 2025, 11 June 2026

Every course of the programme placed in this discipline.
The Academy proposes how each discipline teaches toward the Nexus Standards; the mapping is open for public review. Bodies and standards are named so learners can find and apply their published work; the Academy teaches their use and links to the publisher, and no affiliation is implied.

Key terms
Variations in the climate around its mean state on timescales from months to decades, such as ENSO.
Scenario narratives of future society used with emissions scenarios to drive climate projections.
Methods that derive local or regional climate information from coarse global model output.
The assessment of how climate change has altered the likelihood or intensity of a specific extreme event.
Reports is the Consortium's quarterly publication. What you know about this subject can become evidence, a case or a correction in the next edition, credited to you and published under CC BY 4.0 where it is your own work.
Every course is free and open. Institutions and experts can co-teach, host a cohort, contribute a lab or review a course before it opens.
Our articles, maps and twins are free to read and free to republish. Readers and partners keep it that way.
