Epidemic modelling and forecasting, taught twice over: as the working methods of the field and as its frontier since 2024, with labs on the Academy's tools, open data and the Nexus Standards.
This area covers the mathematical and statistical models of infectious disease spread and their use in preparedness and response: compartmental and network models, real-time estimation of transmission, forecasting and scenario modelling, and the surveillance data they depend on.
Collaborative forecast hubs became routine public health infrastructure: CDC FluSight and the ECDC respiratory forecasting hub publish weekly ensembles scored by the weighted interval score, and CDC's Center for Forecasting and Outbreak Analytics (2022) institutionalised outbreak analytics. PLOS Computational Biology, Evaluating epidemic forecasts in an interval format (Bracher et al.), 2021

How institutions and experts take part
The Academy proposes how each discipline teaches toward the Nexus Standards; the mapping is open for public review. Bodies and standards are named so learners can find and apply their published work; the Academy teaches their use and links to the publisher, and no affiliation is implied.

Key terms
The average number of secondary infections caused by one infected person at a given time, written Rt.
A compartmental model that divides a population into susceptible, exposed, infectious and recovered.
Estimating the current state of an epidemic while accounting for delays in reporting.
A platform that collects, scores and combines forecasts from many modelling teams.
Reports is the Consortium's quarterly publication. What you know about this subject can become evidence, a case or a correction in the next edition, credited to you and published under CC BY 4.0 where it is your own work.
Every course is free and open. Institutions and experts can co-teach, host a cohort, contribute a lab or review a course before it opens.
Our articles, maps and twins are free to read and free to republish. Readers and partners keep it that way.
Risk Academy is a not-for-profit institution. To ask who funds a piece of work, use the funding questions form.
Editors and the expert reviewers named on each article decide what we publish. Funders and partners do not review or approve articles before publication.
