The discipline in brief.

The discipline teaches treaty participation reading from the depositary's records, institutional mapping of regional organisations and basin bodies, transboundary cooperation analysis, track two dialogue, humanitarian and technology cooperation and the links between peace and risk, under the 1969 Convention on the Law of Treaties and the 1997 Watercourses Convention. The Nile basin on the faculty's globe is its teaching case: IGAD, the African Union, the East African Community and the Nile Basin Initiative as columns whose member lists await their rows, and the treaties named with their status pages and never copied. A graduate can read a basin's institutions and agreements from their sources and write a cooperation note that names them.

This area covers how states and institutions cooperate on shared risks through agreements, regional bodies, science diplomacy and dialogue, and how global commons such as the atmosphere, oceans and shared rivers are governed.
