The discipline teaches mental health and psychosocial support in emergencies under the IASC guidelines, psychological first aid, trauma and post-traumatic stress with the resilience most people show, psychosocial risk at work under ISO 45003:2021, climate change and mental health, suicide prevention and community-based support, with the measurement problems each raises. It treats mental health as part of risk assessment, not an afterthought of response. A graduate can plan psychosocial support for a response, assess psychosocial risk in a workplace and choose a measure of well-being with its limits.
This area covers mental health as a dimension of risk: the psychological effects of disasters, conflict, displacement and climate change, psychosocial risk at work, and the services and community support that protect mental health.
