A probability only matters once someone decides on it and someone else understands it.

Twin builder and simulator.

For Department of Decision, Behaviour and Communication: the faculty's twin of L'Aquila on the planet map, the globe and in 3D. Pick a generator, switch layers, run the instruments; every layer prints its provider and date.

The central Apennines: L'Aquila, Amatrice and Norcia: a flat plan of the faculty twin. Terrain 24 to 2,805 m; 3 reference earthquakes, M6.2 to M6.6; Earthquakes M4.5 and above, past week (live): live, loads in the twin; USGS ShakeMap intensity contours: live, loads in the twin. Contours every 500 metres from the elevation grid; reference earthquakes as marks.
The central Apennines: L'Aquila, Amatrice and Norcia, Italy. Flat plan of the same data: relief, the three reference epicentres with magnitude and depth, and the numbers below; the sampler's figure shows one precomputed field with its parameters. The 3D twin opens on devices with WebGL once its data and library have been checked.

Credits and dates per layer are listed under the stage. Relief in the twin is exaggerated ×1.5 for legibility.

What the department studies.

The department teaches decision analysis by backward induction with the value of information on the scenario tree of the Apennine twin, deep uncertainty and robust decision making, scenario design and stress testing with reverse stress tests, risk communication in natural frequencies and calibrated likelihood language, and risk perception and behaviour with the heuristics and the social amplification that shape protective action, with the L'Aquila trial of 2012 as the case on how probabilities were communicated. A graduate can solve a tree, design and exercise a scenario, and write a message that leads to action without overstating what is known.

Department of Decision, Behaviour and Communication is a department of Faculty of Risk Science and Methods with 5 disciplines. 2 of the 4 courses with their primary discipline here are open for enrolment now; 2 are in preparation.
