Twin figures for the Horn of Africa and the Nile basin states, counted from its layers at their stated dates.
For Foresight and futures: the faculty's twin of Horn of Africa on the planet map, the globe and in 3D. Pick a generator, switch layers, run the instruments; every layer prints its provider and date.
Drag to turn the globe, Ctrl with the wheel to zoom. Keyboard: arrows turn, + and - zoom, 0 resets, V steps through the views, Escape clears.
Flat map of the same data: the 13 countries on a graticule and the numbers below. The globe opens on devices with WebGL once its library has been checked; the live alerts, events and divisions load in the globe on request, each with its data date.
The map loads from this site as it nears the view (MapLibre 6.9.1, checked by hash).
The discipline teaches horizon scanning and weak signal detection after the Futures Toolkit of the Government Office for Science, the three horizons framing, strategic scenario building, decision making under deep uncertainty, backcasting, technology and geopolitical futures and the interests of future generations in decisions. The faculty's horizon scan is its instrument: the live GDACS and EONET signals of the Horn of Africa placed by impact, likelihood and horizon, counted and clustered, never scored into a prediction. A graduate can run a scan whose every signal carries its source, build a scenario set that says what it is not and write a foresight note a decision maker can act on.
Foresight is the structured exploration of alternative futures so that institutions can anticipate change and act earlier. It is taught in the department of Governance, Public Policy and Foresight, Faculty of Governance, Policy and International Affairs, through courses still to be authored and 3 more that also teach it.
8 subtopics, taught across its courses and labs.
Not yet taught by a course: Horizon scanning and strategic foresight practice.
Recent developments in foresight and futures, each with its source; sources checked on 16 October 2026. Summaries are short readings of the source; follow the link for the full account.
News and research as they are published, per discipline, with the faculty's other tools.

No course has this as its primary discipline yet. It is listed so the gap stays visible.
The courses on its authoring list are named below.
Approved for authoringno enrolment and no achievement until authored and reviewed
These courses count in their own primary discipline and also teach this one; they do not count towards its achievement as primary courses.
| Lab | What you do in it | Courses using it |
|---|---|---|
| Network lab | Build dependency graphs, find critical nodes, trace cascades | 1 |
| Trigger lab | Set forecast thresholds, pre-agreed actions and messages | 1 |
Nexus Foundry system pages describe what each system and its rooms are designed to do; they are not a service on offer, and studying here gives no access to them.
The catalogue lists each course with its outcomes, labs, hours and level.
